Tokyo Drift - Intro Sequence Reimagined

what if it was faster, and more furious?

2024-02-23

Originally made for a university assignment in motion design. The brief was fairly simple: Choose a film, and create a totally new title sequence for it using Davinci Resolve’s Fusion compositor. I chose The Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift (2001).

Process

To start with, I found sketches of the three most prominent cars in the film: The Mitsubishi Lancer, the Mazda RX7, and the Nissan 350z. I used those sketches as references to create vector silhouettes of the cars, which I could bring into Resolve and play around with. It was important to me to have fluid transitions between each “scene” of the animation, and of course to keep everything closely in sync with the music.

The music, by the way, is EARDRUM by six impala.

Reflections

I made this video a year ago, so there are a few things I would change about it in retrospect. The video is a bit fast-paced for the number of credits that need to be shown, and some names are hard to read without hitting pause. I think if I was doing it again, I would extend the sequence to give each individual name more time on screen. And also fix the weird vertical ones.
