Tokyo Drift - Intro Sequence Reimagined

what if it was faster, and more furious?

2024-02-23

Originally made for a university assignment in motion design. The brief was fairly simple: Choose a film, and create a totally new title sequence for it using Davinci Resolve’s Fusion compositor. I chose The Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift (2001).

Process

To start with, I found sketches of the three most prominent cars in the film: The Mitsubishi Lancer, the Mazda RX7, and the Nissan 350z. I used those sketches as references to create vector silhouettes of the cars, which I could bring into Resolve and play around with.

The individual “scenes” of the animation were mostly improvised as I went through them. It was important to me to have fluid transitions throughout, and to keep everything closely in sync with the music - but I didn’t worry overly about how that would work until I reached them.

I also endeavoured to keep all of the credits present in the original opening scene of the movie. This was difficult, since that scene is significantly longer - I had to condense a lot of information into a much smaller time. Truthfully I think this is the weakest part of this work, because some of the names have very little screen time or are set at difficult angles to read.

The music, by the way, is EARDRUM by six impala.
