a mysterious computer playing some baffling music

2024-11-01

Buelfest is an annual, week-long online music festival run by a friend of mine at the beginning of November. The event is to celebrate the birthday of their dog, Bueller, and also to raise money for charities and fundraisers helping to train service dogs. This was my set submission for the 2024 event, which played on the first day.

The music is a mashup of various songs I enjoy - you can see what’s playing at any given time in the top-left corner of the video.

The video itself was created using Tooll3, which, for the uninitiated, is a real-time generative video toolkit with extremely powerful timing controls. It could be thought of as a higher-level, open-source alternative to TouchDesigner. The scene is built of multiple individually animated display objects, which are combined into one layer and processed to appear as though they are graphics on a CRT screen. This was a fun experiment with post-processing effects and I’m very happy with how it turned out - especially the first few seconds of the animation!

(If you are a musician, DJ, or video artist of any genre or skill level, you’re welcome to create something for Buelfest yourself! The event is totally open to anyone. See their website for more info.)
